Subtitled T-days: 'Son of Saul' & 'Ma ma'
During the summer, every Tuesday and Thursday screenings at Cinema Europa's main hall will have English subtitles next to the Croatian. This is a chance for our growing international audience in the unique setting of Zagreb's 90-year-old cinema in Varšavska 3 to see our non-English-speaking regular releases on the big screen.
On August 9th (Tuesday) at 9 pm our program 'Subtitled T-days' will present 'Son of Saul' (original title: 'Saul fia'; Croatian title: 'Saulov sin') and on August 11th (Thursday) at 6:40 pm 'Ma ma' (Croatian title: 'Ma ma').
'Son of Saul', "a powerful debut" (Variety) by Hunagrian director Laszlo Nemes gives "an outstanding, excoriating look at evil in Auschwitz" (The Guardian). The Oscar-winning harrowing drama is set in the Auschwitz death camp during the Second World War. The film (among a numerous other awards and acknowledgements) won a Grand Prix at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and Golden Globe.
'Ma ma', a "wondrously imaginative melodrama about life, death, romance, and motherhood" (TIFF), is the latest film from acclaimed Spanish director Julio Medem. The film stars Penélope Cruz as a woman whose grace and enormous capacity for love guide her through tragedies and miracles alike.
