Subtitled Tuesday: 'Difret' & 'The High Sun'

On November 3rd our regular screening program 'Subtitled Tuesdays' (with English subtitles included) will present an award-winning drama 'Difret' (Croatian title: 'Hrabra djevojka') and Croatian film 'The High Sun' (orig. Croatian title: 'Zvizdan'). 'Difret' screening starts at 5 pm and 'The High Sun' at 9:15 pm.

'Difret', first narrative feature film by Ethiopian writer/director Zeresenay Berhane Mehari, is based on the inspirational true story of a young Ethiopian girl and a tenacious lawyer embroiled in a life-or-death clash between cultural traditions and their country's advancement of equal rights. This "compelling and authentic" (LA Times) won a Panorama Audience Award at the Berlin International Film Festival and Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

'The High Sun' premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival (as the first Croatian feature film to be chosen since the independence of Croatia) winning the Jury Prize. The film shines a light on three love stories, set in three consecutive decades, in two neighbouring Balkan villages with a long history of inter-ethnic hatred. It is a film about the fragility – and intensity – of forbidden love. "Matanic’s strongest film to date" (Variety) has been selected as the Croatian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards.

Note: 'Subtitled Tuesdays' program takes place in Cinema Europa's big hall on every Tuesday, except when there are being hosted various film festivals, promotions or other events which are not part of Cinema Europa's regular annual film program. Screenings included in this program are always marked in our screening schedulge with a caption Subtitled Tuesday (HR & ENG subtitles).
