Subtitled Tuesday: 'The Square'
On July 3, our regular screening program 'Subtitled Tuesday' (with English subtitles included) will present the hillarious, yet disturbing art-world satire 'The Square' (2017), directed by celebrated Swedish director and one of the world's top cineasts Ruben Östlund. Screening starts at 8:30 p. m.
Christian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum, who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next show is 'The Square', an installation which invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian's foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum's PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for 'The Square'. The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.
'The Square' is a poignant satirical drama reflecting our times - about the sense of community, moral courage and the affluent person's need for egocentricity in an increasingly uncertain world. The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, and triumphed at the 30th European Film Awards Ceremony, where it won six „European Oscars“ in total (Best European Film, Best Comedy, Best Director, Best Screenwriter and Best Production Designer). It has also been nominated for the Golden Globe Award in the Best Foreign Film category.
