Subtitled Tuesday: 'The Handmaiden'
On 13 June our regular screening program 'Subtitled Tuesday' (with English subtitles included) will present the South Korean erotic psychological thriller The Handmaiden, directed by Park Chan-wook and starring Kim Min-hee, Kim Tae-ri, Ha Jung-woo and Cho Jin-woong. Screening starts at 9:10 p. m.
Former convict Fujiwara yearns to get his hands on the wealth belonging to rich Japanese heiress Hideko. He hires Sook-Hee, an orphaned pickpocket to help him by becoming her handmaiden, while devising an elaborate plot to seduce and bilk her out of her inheritance. Inspired by the novel Fingersmith by British writer Sarah Waters, Park moves the setting of his film to Korea during the Japanese colonization period in the 1930s. The film was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
